Computer Forensic Investigators
With
over 90% of the worlds business documents being drafted
on computers and the relentless use of e-mail, instant messaging
and internet business by nearly everyone, much of todays
civil litigation evidence can be derived from computers.
Computer Evidence Recovery has a computer forensic investigation
team with the ability to locate and recover any and all
relevant information or traces of same that may exist on
a computer or storage device. This includes recovering items
such as e-mails viewed but not saved, websites
visited, deleted documents, uninstalled software, etc. Besides
corporate or commercial applications, how much information
exists on a personal computer at home? How about every webpage
you have ever visited, and every picture on every one of
those pages? Banking information, logon information to secure
sites such as chat, newsgroups, email, personals, back portals
to work networks, etc. It doesn't take long to see the possibilities. The
great news about this type of data is that unlike a piece
of paper which only shows us what we can see, electric data
can have information about its creation, multiple
versions of that information, who it was transmitted to,
history of its use, etc. We are proud to say that
if a piece of information exists on a computer or storage
device, we will be able to locate it and produce it for
inclusion in evidence.
This
type of computer forensic investigation should not be confused
with the type of searches the average I.T. employee or computer
consultant will conduct. We employ a number of methods and
investigative tools to locate and reconstruct each file
or fragment, often including deleted items and fragments
that other I.T. Consultants reported did not exist. Many
of our clients, as well as the opposition, are often surprised
at what we are able to find that was thought to be deleted
or erased.

Specialist.
We can
recover electronic evidence during a computer forensic investigation
from the following types of devices:
One of the
key elements in every data forensics procedure is time.
Users may unintentionally or inadvertently overwrite evidence
simply by continuing to complete their daily tasks. Our
specialists will quickly and cost-effectively collect and
preserve data or evidence that may have been deleted or
become inaccessible through normal computing methods. Our
specialists can determine if certain information exists
and, if so, where it might be located.
When
the data storage media is recovered either on location or
at our lab facility, an accurate audit trail commences.
The media is immediately logged into a tracking system and
a log is produced. This log, suitable for all legal proceedings,
accompanies the media throughout the recovery process. Computer
Evidence Recovery, Inc. employees who handle the media ensure
the continuity of evidence by adding their name, signature,
date and a detailed description of what was done.

As licensed
private investigators, we approach each computer forensic
case as we would any other type of investigation. Our investigative
approach to computer forensics is not shared by many of
the computer experts in North America whose
idea of an investigation is to hope that the
forensic software they purchased will find the data you
need. Forensics software is a vital part of this type of
investigation, but it does not think. It is unlikely that
you would let someone who has some medical devices but is
not a surgeon operate on you. Accordingly, why would you
hire someone who is not an investigator to investigate your
computer cases? We apply our training and our investigative
mind set to every computer forensic case. Our investigative
advantage is very real and many of our clients throughout
North America, as well as those they are opposing, are surprised
at what our agents are able to find on a computer hard drive.
So
how do you go about selecting a computer forensic private
investigator? More and more folks are hanging out their
shingle after having spent a few bucks on a course. I get
asked the question time and again, usually by someone with
a case located outside of one of our home cities. Why
should we hire C.E.R. when we have people here locally?
There are four very solid components that a computer investigator
or forensic specialist needs to possess. They need to have
an absolute understanding of how all the parts of a computer
work together to place the data on the screen. They must
completely grasp how a hard drive works and how, where,
and why data is saved to a hard drive or deleted from a
hard drive. Unfortunately, there are large numbers of computer
specialists with all kinds of degrees that think they can
automatically do this because of their background. This
is untrue.
The
next component has to be a diverse arsenal of forensic software,
hardware, and the intimate knowledge of how to use it. This
is an extremely expensive proposition. Considering each
piece of software can range from 1,200 - 6,000 dollars,
and then the training can be another 3,000 - 10,000 above
that, it can add up quickly. We haven't even began to address
the hardware necessary! On top of this, no forensic specialist's
toolbox should have only one of the programs that are out
there. That would be doing the client a disservice. Each
of the major programs has its strengths and weaknesses,
and the exigencies of the case will determine which program
is best suited. Sadly people with some money and some time
to take some classes make up the largest portion of the
'unqualified' group.
The
third component is the investigative mindset. Having a solid
investigative background will obviously make you more effective
in this field beside someone that doesn't possess that skill
set. As a licensed private investigator, we have that experience,
training and expertise.
The
final and probably most important component is the ability
to communicate. You could be the best forensic specialist
in the world, but if you can't effectively communicate to
your client, or more importantly, a judge and/or jury, all
of the work is useless.
We have
assisted Canadian and US businesses and attorneys in many
types of computer forensics cases including, but not limited
to, the following: Data theft, software infringement, fraud,
